We are delighted to announce more than one Volunteer of the Month this month!
On the 4 June, the Volunteer Edinburgh Inspiring Volunteer awards were held at the City Chambers and presented by The Rt. Hon. Lord Provost and Lord Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh.
Among those recognised were Juliana Valcarcel, a long-time volunteer with Bethany House and the Bethany Bookshop team.
Bethany Bookshop Team
The Bethany Bookshop is unique in being solely volunteer-run. It boasts a dedicated team of 24 individuals who handle all aspects of its operations, from store management to customer service.
These book-loving volunteers, with their diverse expertise, ensure the shop’s success by maintaining the quality reads on offer and broadening the collection. Their invaluable contributions to the Leith community and Bethany’s cause deserve our recognition and gratitude.
Juliana Valcarcel
Since September 26, 2023, Juliana has volunteered for Bethany House tirelessly. She has formed strong relationships with residents, overcoming language barriers with grace.
She says:
‘The opportunity to spend my time here working at Bethany House has taught me the importance of being part of a community. Doing my part through my work here has enriched my life and made me a better person.’
We believe she embodies the belief that volunteering not only impacts others positively but also fosters personal growth through learning from those supported.

A huge congratulations to all involved! And thank you for everything you do.
